Orbera in Puerto Rico
Weight loss without surgery
What is Orbera and how does it work?
Orbera is a weight loss system that uses a balloon that is placed in the stomach through endoscopy. By inflating the balloon, it takes up room in your stomach to help you lose weight, limiting the amounts of food you can consume.
Orbera does NOT require surgery. It is a completely ambulatory procedure, minimally invasive and it is not permanent. The ball is temporary and is removed after 6 months.
The Orbera intragastric balloon is designed to be used in conjunction with a nutritional and psychological support program, so that weight loss is more successful and lasting. The procedure has been performed for years on thousands of patients worldwide and is now available in the United States upon obtaining FDA approval.
The Orbera procedure is recommended for people who want to lose 20 to 30 pounds of weight and who have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 to 40. If you have tried diet and exercise without success, this is an excellent way to get back to try to lose weight.
After six months, the balloon was removed endoscopically. It is recommended to continue the nutritional and psychological support program for an additional six months to complete one year for greater success in the process of improving your well-being.
About the procedure
Prior to your procedure, our team members will meet with you to explain what it is, discuss your history, your goals, your commitment to the program and confirm if you are a good candidate. At this time, you will also be guided on costs and forms of payment.
You will be given written instructions on what to do to prepare for the procedure. It is performed on an outpatient basis, with moderate sedation. The procedure will take about 30 minutes. Then, you must remain under observation until the doctor determines that you are fit to be discharged.
It is normal for you to experience gastric discomfort as well as nausea or vomiting the first few days. We recommend that if possible, plan to rest at home and not do heavy activities for the first 48 to 72 hours.
We will guide you on the diet you should follow the first days and how to progress to a normal diet.
During the six months that you have the ball in your stomach, you will need to participate in the Nutritional Support Program regularly to monitor your progress and help you improve your eating habits and lifestyle. These sessions must continue for 6 months after the ball is removed.
The removal of the balloon involves a process similar to that of when it was inserted. You will be provided with specific instructions that you must follow to the letter in preparation for the procedure to remove the ball.
